About the logos:
(Top right) The 1st to 35th iteration of the title logo. We used a wide textbook font on a phototypesetter, but there were also adjustments done to the volume such as making the “ki” larger. It was arranged grandly and completely differed from the Otomo works up to that point that had used small arrangements of a simple gothic or mincho font. “The font was set to match the image of the work’s first appearance on a front cover. A logo using alphabetical letters might have also been fine, but I decided to go with katakana, keeping ease of understanding and impact in mind. After I went through a bunch of variations on the arrangement for the three characters, for the 35th iteration I put it in there quite small, in a style similar to my older works.” Also, for the 28th iteration, a lens was used to alter it and give it a right leaning italic effect.
(1st from top, left) This is the title logo that was only used for the 36th iteration. It uses the broadway font on a phototypesetter. This iteration marked the beginning of when the logo would appear in English for a while. “It was about that time I was getting bored of the logo so I decided to change it, and I was getting into the second chapter as well. At the time I was interested in art deco, so I decided to go with a font in that style. But after I saw how it looked when it was actually printed, I didn’t really like it, so it was only used that one time.”
(2nd from top, left) The 37th to 48th iteration of the title logo. The name of the author appears in English as, “Ohtomo Katsuhiro” in the same font face as the title. “This was also something inspired by art deco, but I think what we ended up with here was a lot better. I was drawing art deco style skyscrapers for splash pages, like the ones that were built in New York during the 1920s~1930s. And then, when Neo Tokyo and the skyscrapers were destroyed in the third part, we started using the “Hirata logo”. Also, the third part marks the point when we took out the “H” from “Ohtomo”. I forget the exact reason why, maybe it just didn’t look right.”
(Bottom right) The 49th to 71st iteration of the title logo. This was written by the mangaka Hirata Hiroshi, the details about that are on another page. For the 49th through 55th iteration, “Katsuhiro Otomo’s” was inserted in place of the author’s name, and for the 56th to 71st iteration, the author’s name went back to appearing in kanji. “I wanted to make a logo that looked like calligraphy. Instead of the small logos which we had quite a few of, I wanted something that had a lot of energy and jumped out. We discovered that if you set this logo on the side it looks like it’s in English, so for the 54th iteration that’s what we did.”
(3rd from top, left) The 72nd to 120th iteration of the title logo. The name of the author appears in English in the same font. “The story was entering the last chapter, the fourth part, so I used a logo that I thought was just right. I think this logo embodies the image that comes to mind for “Akira” and it is quite close to the tankoubon logo. For the 94th iteration of the logo, we put a reversed version of the logo with a lower opacity behind it and tried to get it to look like it was in Russian.” Also for the 85th iteration, a pattern of lights was used for the title logo.
(4th from top, left) The tankoubon title logo. “We used the impact font and cut off a part from the top of it. It’s simple and majestic, and was decided on with the format of the entire tankoubon collection in mind, as something that had a western sense to it, similar to that of American comics.”
worth reposting again since his birthday happened recently and I rarely see the commentary for these logos written down in English.
